Each summer, our favorite swimwear brands keep us on our toes for what trends they will put down the runway. For 2022 designers like Bottega Veneta, Christopher Esber, and Missoni took a more minimalistic approach to silhouettes through subtle design updates, classic styles, and new fabrications on timeless pieces. In lieu of high-sheen fabrics, these labels went with string sets, textured ruffles, and subtle pops of pastels. Others constructed tasteful cut-outs tops; others were driven by the retro revival with nostalgic prints and patterns. And while some of this summer’s trends reflect that newfound sense of reworking classics, there’s one thing for certain—this summer is all about making your swimwear the center of your outfit’s attention. So keep reading because we’re revealing the 9 new swimwear trends of 2022 that you will soon see everywhere.

1.

Gone Gingham

Gingham has officially made its comeback. The iconic print has been revived through new colorways like Alexandra Miro's Green twin set. Though, if you lean more on the minimalist side, try Onia's sophisticated swimsuit, which taps this season's chocolate brown trend.

2.

Super Strappy

While the tie bikini has been around for decades, it’s getting a modern update this season with simple straps that wrap around the body. The elongated straps allow for the top to be styled in various ways, making it highly versatile. If you have limited suitcase space while traveling, this bikini is the ultimate multi-use solution.

3.

Basic Bandeau

The basic bandeau bikini is back—but whatever you do, don’t confuse basic with boring. This season the bandeau is appearing at the top of our Instagram in a few forms, ones that promote luxurious textures and eye-catching designs. For the minimalist, we suggest treating yourself to Eres minimalist twin set, but if you want a bolder look then Mara Hoffman is the way to go.

4.

Fleshed Out

Neutral swimsuits are the daring summer trend worth trying. Work the tonal look with simple silhouettes from Matteau, or opt for a textured appearance courtesy of Cult Gaia. The trick to this trend is to have fun with it.

5.

Sculpted Bustier Bodice

Sculpted bustier bodices give a nod to vintage designs and prove to be equally flattering as they are on-trend. Go classic with Haight's Vintage Bodysuit or try something more daring like Alexandra Miro's striking green hue. What we love about this swimwear trend is how it complements the wearer's frame and does all the work for you.

6.

Ruching

Ruching is a staple across RTW, but its flattering and comfy benefits go beyond your wardrobe with ruched swimwear. Isa Boulder’s one piece is the ultimate display of feminine bunching. You can also opt for a pared-back version with Isabel Marant or House of Aama's cinched styles that are equally timeless.

7.

Clever Cut-Outs

Last year, we saw the rise of above-the-keyboard dressing through tasteful cut-outs—and this season, the trend has been translated into swimwear. With no fear of tan lines in sight, we’re indulging in creative cut-outs like Lisa Marie Fernandez’s one-piece suit and Blackbough’s vintage-inspired belly cut-out style.

8.

Retro Reboot

Throwback prints are all over swimwear so we narrowed down a few favorites. Bottega Veneta's  abstract number and Valentino's multi-colored option epitomize the optimistic energy of this summer. Style the throwback look with oversized sunnies and an elevated cover-up for an all-day outfit.

1.

Tankini Revival

As far as nostalgic swimwear goes, tankinis and boyshorts were essential for comfortable, care-free galavanting as a kid—and both are stepping back into the spotlight. A slew of buzzy brands has reinterpreted halter neck bikini tops, like Balenciaga's pink pairing or Bottega Veneta’s trendy set.
